Theodor von Hörmann (Imst, Tyrol 1840 - Graz 1895)

Theodor von Hoermann was an officer in the military campaigns of 1859 and 1866 in Italy and against Prussia. From 1873 to 1875 he studied at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts where his teachers were Eduard Peithner v. Lichtenfels and Anselm Feuerbach. For nearly ten years Hörmann taught freehand drawing at the k. u. k. military school in St. Poelten. In 1884, after his military service, he devoted himself completely to the graphic art. From 1886 to 1889 Raphael Collin was his teacher in Paris; after that, Theodor Hoermann travelled to the Bretagne, the Channel Islands and to Barbizon. There, the painter studied modern French painting.

Theodor von Hörmann constantly worked outdoors. He was in contact with Emil-Jakob Schindler. Back in Vienna, Hoermann became speaker of the opposition within the Kuenstlerhaus. Every year he submitted several works to the exhibitions of the association of graphic artists. More than once his artworks were refused. In 1893, for the first time, he exhibited a representative collection of his paintings in the "Künstlerhaus" in Vienna. Theodor Hoermann favored a state gallery of modern art and can be seen as a pioneer of what was to become the "Wiener Secession".
