Otto Rudolf Schatz (Vienna 1900 - Vienna 1961)

From 1915-1918 he studied at the "Wiener Kunstegewerbeschule" under Otto Strnad and Anton Ritter von Kenner. Around 1920 he received a contract with Nirenstein, an artdealer. Schatz also was in touch with the gallery Gurlitt in Belrin, the German Avalun publishing company and the Berlin bookgild. In 1936/37, together with his Jewish wife, he emigrated New York. In 1938 he was prohibited to exhibit his works in his home country; in 1944/45 he was detained at the concentration camp in Bistriz. 1946 he returned to Vienna. Schatz was a member of the well known "Hagenbund" and "Wiener Secession".

In his early paintings he was associated with expressionism. Later on, Otto Rudolf Schatz became a representative of "Die neue Sachlichkeit", an art form containing social criticism. Oustanding were his strong color contrasts; his preferred technic was the woodcut. Often used motifs were the world work and industrialism.
