Alfons Walde (Oberndorf bei Kitzbühel 1891 - Kitzbühel 1958)

Alfons Walde began studying architecture in Vienna in 1910. He was influenced by Hodler, Klimt, Schiele and Albin Egger-Lienz. After his military service he returned to Kitzbuhel to devote himself to painting. From 1926 on he was a member of the "Kuenstlerhaus" in Vienna.

In Kitzbuhel Alfons Walde founded the publishing company "Kunstverlag A. Walde" which published coloured etchings of his paintings. He built his own country house which is situated at the Hahnenkamm in Kitzbuhel. The ornaments in his decorative still lives and the depictions of society women point to the influence of Klimt and Schiele. Later the artist focused on his country's tradition and way of life. Alfons Walde depicted scenes of Tyrolean peasant life which excel in their strong colours and impasto technique.

From 1920 onwards Walde was internationally known, mostly because of his advertisments for Tyrolean winter resorts. His interesting early works are mainly forgotten today. He exhibited extensively in Austria as well as abroad, for instance at the Christmas Exhibition of the "Künstlerhaus" in Vienna (1926). In 1955 Walde was appointed professor.
